Insights into past and present experience:

Pediatric, Child & Adolescent Nutrition:  Most of my clinical experience has been with children and adolescents ages 0 to 18. I have supported children with growth concerns, prematurity, feeding difficulties, oral supplementation, formula needs, texture challenges, and complex medical conditions.

Pregnancy & Gestational Diabetes: I have experience in gestational diabetes, pre-gestational diabetes, and multiple pregnancy clinics. I work with the diet someone already has and adjust it to support both the parent and the baby. My goal is to make nutrition feel manageable, especially during a stage of life where needs can change quickly.

Digestive Health: I have supported children and adolescents with digestive concerns such as IBS, Crohn’s disease, colitis, IBD, and other gastrointestinal challenges. I also have experience with enteral nutrition, nutrition support, and some FODMAP-related approaches within pediatric care.

Balanced Vegetarian & Plant-Based Eating: As someone who has been vegetarian for several years, I understand both the personal and practical sides of plant-based eating. I help clients build balanced meals, include enough protein, and find plant-based options that fit their routines, preferences, and nutritional needs.

Intuitive Eating & Relationship With Food:  I support an approach that examines the client’s relationship with food, not just what is on the plate. I have training and internship experience with intuitive eating, anti-diet, and weight-neutral approaches, and I aim to help clients build a more positive and sustainable way of eating.

Weight-Related Goals: When clients come in with weight-related concerns, I do not focus on strict weekly weight-loss targets. Instead, I look at eating patterns, health goals, relationship with food, and realistic behaviour changes. My goal is to support long-term health in a way that feels respectful and sustainable.

Melissa's Story

What inspired Melissa to become a Dietitian & Plant based

  • What Inspired Me to Become a Dietitian & Plant-Based

My passion for nutrition stems from a childhood of very selective eating patterns. I was the type of kid who ate plain pasta with alfredo sauce every day for months on end, and who didn’t accept many new foods that I was unfamiliar with.

As I got older and started to accept trying new things, I realized how vast the world of food really is. Here were all of these new foods that I was trying for the first time in my early teens, which opened up a whole new part of my life. With each new food I tried, I also became curious about where they came from and how they differed not only in taste but also in their effect on me.

I fell even more in love with nutrition during my basic nutrition and physiology classes in school, when I learned about how different foods impact our bodies. I started to take an interest in the people around me – friends, family members, and acquaintances– and wanted to know how they went about cooking and eating in their daily lives.

Many of the people I know have chronic diseases, conditions or perform in activities/sports that are greatly affected by nutritional status. My curiosity to learn and my desire to help others be at their best lined up incredibly well with the core practices of dietitians. My time in the Dietetics program at McGill University only fortified this motivation to keep expanding my knowledge and being able to guide others and myself to lead happier, healthier lives.

  • Motivation to Become Plant-Based and Vegetarian

I have been a vegetarian since 2019, after exploring vegetarian eating on and off since high school. For me, it started as both an ethical choice and a way to build eating habits that felt more sustainable long term.

I also had acne growing up and wanted to care for my health in a way that did not feel like a strict diet. Vegetarian eating became a way for me to make choices that aligned with my values while still feeling realistic and enjoyable.

Today, I still eat mostly vegetarian, with occasional fish or seafood, and I understand how important it is for plant-based eating to feel balanced, flexible, and nourishing.

FAQ with Melissa

Frequently asked questions

  • What is your registration number as an Registered Dietitian?

License to practice in Ontario: #17699

License to practice in Quebec: #8114

  • Do you give meals plans?

Yes, we create personalized meal plans with you using the That Clean Life and Nutrium apps. You will receive your meal right after the session. We ask that you do an initial assessment before creating the meal plan, this is necessary as we are dietitians and need to ensure that we know your goals, medical history, current intake, and preferences before making any recommendations.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

    Cancellation Policy

We understand that circumstances may arise that require you to cancel or reschedule your session, and we aim to provide a transparent cancellation policy. Please review the following guidelines:

    Cancellation Notice:

      • We kindly request that clients provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice before the scheduled session if they need to cancel or reschedule.

    Cancellation Fees:

      • If a client cancels a session with less than 24 hours’ notice or fails to attend a scheduled session without prior notice, a cancellation fee of 100% of the session fee will be charged. This fee is necessary because we are often unable to fill the vacant spot on short notice, resulting in lost opportunities for others.

    Reminder Notifications:

      • To help you remember your upcoming sessions, we provide text and email reminders prior to your meeting. These notifications serve as a helpful reminder and offer a convenient way to confirm, cancel, or reschedule your appointment.

    Cancellation and Rescheduling:

      • Clients have the option to manage their appointments through their client portal. This allows for easy cancellation or rescheduling of sessions at your convenience. We encourage you to use this feature if your plans change.

Our goal is to provide quality service to all our clients while respecting everyone’s time. By adhering to this cancellation policy, you help us maintain a fair and efficient scheduling system. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

  • Do I have to pay when booking a consultation?

No, your Credit Card information will be required to book a consultation, however, you will not be charged until the end of your session or in the case of a late cancellation.

  • Are all the sessions online?

Yes. Sessions usually take place on Zoom, and if you prefer, we can do it over the phone. We use the excellent Practice Better software for scheduling, communication, and invoicing. Once you start with us, you will have access to your Practice Better client portal and a zoom link will be created for your sessions.

  • How do I know if my insurance covers your services?

You should check with your insurance company to see if dietitian and/or nutritionist services are covered.

  • Can you provide insurance receipts?

Yes, I will provide you with an insurance receipt at the end of every session.

  • Can you do in person sessions in Ottawa?

I only do Zoom sessions at this time.
