Dietitian vs Nutritionist: What’s the Real Difference?

dietitian-vs-nutritionist

Whether you are in Canada or the USA, there are various terms used to describe a nutrition health professional.

We get it, it all sounds the same, but somehow it isn’t?

In this article, we will cover the difference between nutritionists and dietitians, where it matters and where it doesn’t, so you can make informed, safe decisions about who to work with for your own health.

So… What is a dietitian?

Canada

  • Dietitian: Protected nationwide, meaning that only regulated professionals, those who have met specific training and education criteria can use it.
  • Nutritionist: Not protected everywhere. It all depends on the province you live in, so not all nutritionists are dietitians or regulated. Even “holistic nutritionists” are not the same as regulated dietitian credentials.

USA

  • Dietitians: Just like in Canada,  RD and RDN (registered dietitians and registered dietitian-nutritionists) are the gold standard titles.
    • As of Jan 1, 2024, a graduate degree is the minimum requirement to be able to take the registration exam for dietitians.
    • Typically, becoming a dietitian in the USA includes a master’s degree, supervised practice and a national exam.
  • Nutritionist: The term is also not protected, meaning that anyone, no matter their level of training, education or expertise, could call themselves a “nutritionist”. It is not regulated, meaning there are no protective measures for those seeking the help of these “nutritionists”.

Can a “Nutritionist” Be Legit? How to tell

As we covered above, nutritionists are only protected in SOME provinces in Canada, and the regulations vastly differ in the USA.

That said, in some states, there are some credible and legal credentials. One of these is the CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist), which requires education, supervised practice, and an exam through the American Nutrition Association pathways.

All of this to say, a nutritionist can be excellent, but it all depends on what it means where you’re located.

  • Alberta, Quebec, and Nova Scotia are the only provinces that protect the title nutritionist
  • Otherwise, look for specific education if you can only see the term nutritionist :
    • A master’s degree (in nutrition or a health-science related field)
    • Practical and supervised clinical experience
    • Standardized licensing exam with regulations that will maintain the quality of practice.

Plant-Based Credentials That Actually Matter (Vegan/Vegetarian Focus)

Now that we have gone through the differences between a dietitian and a nutritionist, you may be wondering which credentials actually matter when looking for a plant-based or vegan expert.

The titles so look for would be:

  • Vegan/plant-based RD/Dt.P or RD/RDN
  • Training and certifications in addition to the titles above.

Remember that plant-based isn’t just a lifestyle or preference. It changes how your dietitian creates plans for you. What matters is how the provider earned their title and what they are doing now.

Red Flags: When “Plant-Based Coaching” Isn’t Evidence-Based

Here are some things to take into consideration when looking for plant-based/vegan support:

  • Remember that many non-dietitian titles are not the same or equivalent to regulated credentials.
    • Regulation means dietitians are accountable and have a complaint process
  • Anyone selling unnecessary supplements or gimmicks immediately creates a conflict of interest.

A great rule of thumb for you is, if the plan is heavily founded on supplements, detoxes, or one-size-fits-all approaches, it’s a huge red flag (especially for kids, pregnancy or medical conditions)
