Can You Lose Weight on a Vegan Diet

vegan-weightloss

Dieting culture has been around for a long time, and many people turn to veganism as another diet to help them lose weight. Adopting a vegan diet can help you achieve your weight loss goals. Let’s dive into how this can be done without compromising your health.

How Can I Lose Weight on a Vegan Diet?

Focus on nutrient dense whole foods

Weight loss involves consuming less calories than you are burning. By eating foods lower in calories, but higher in nutrients you can maintain a calorie deficit without compromising your health.

Whole plant-based foods not only are nutrient dense, but they also contain fibre which helps us feel full for longer.

Alternatively, ultra-processed foods like Oreos or chips, high in calories and low in nutrients, tend to leave us wanting more.

Focus on foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds and limit ultra-processed foods high in calories and low in nutrients.

Add a protein source to every meal and snack

Like fibre, protein can also leave you feeling full for longer. Whole food plant-based sources, like tofu or beans, are high in protein and fibre, helping you stay satisfied without the excess calories.

Develop mindfulness

You may be thinking I already eat plenty of nutrient dense foods, but I still feel like I’m overeating.

Do you find yourself watching TV or reading the newspaper when eating? Turning off the TV and slowing down is key to understanding your fullness cues. Try to avoid distractions and focus on the sensory experience of eating.

Beyond diet – exercise

As I mentioned earlier, an important part of weight loss is maintaining a calorie deficit. Exercise is not only healthy for your body and mind, but it can help you burn more calories throughout the day

Did you know muscles burn more calories than fat even at rest? Building more muscle through resistance training can help encourage weight loss and boost your metabolism.

Are Vegans Less Obese

Research has shown that vegans tend to weigh less than others, but this is not necessarily the case for all vegans.

As more people become vegan, there has been a rise in the production of ultra-processed vegan foods

Furthermore, veganism is not just a diet but a lifestyle with the goal of avoiding all animal-based products. Folks may choose this lifestyle for environmental or animal rights reasons.

Therefore, weight loss or health may not be the goal for all vegans.

When focusing on whole foods, however, not only can a vegan diet be considered healthy, but it may also help you lose weight.

Can Becoming Vegan Help You Lose Weight

Be wary of diet culture

Fad diets seem to be everywhere often with the promise of fast weight loss. The only problem is many of us end up regaining the weight and then some. These diets even exist in the vegan world, but how can we spot them?

Avoid diets that are:

  • Trying to sell you their product,
  • Making unrealistic promises,
  • Highly restrictive and hard to maintain

A healthy vegan diet shouldn’t be restrictive but is rather an overall pattern of eating focusing on whole foods.

Are your weight loss goals realistic?

Have you ever tried to lose weight quickly but then regained the weight back within the year? Healthy sustainable weight loss takes time, but a healthy weight for you may not be as far as you think!

In fact, research has shown that for those living with obesity a weight loss of only 6-7% can have significant health benefits.

Other factors beyond diet that effect weight

There are many factors beyond diet to consider that may be keeping your from meeting your weight loss goals:

  • Your stress levels
  • Hormones
  • The environment around you

Weight loss is not always as simple as making a diet change. That’s why working one-on-one with a registered dietitian can help you examine other areas that may be keeping you from achieving your goal.
